Case Study: Custom Architectural Muntins at Maverick Pipe at Rantoul, IL

With a need for expansive open space and a preference for adapting an existing structure, Maverick Pipe found the ideal setting at the former Chanute Air Force Base. Originally established to train pilots during World War I, the base remained active until 1993 and is now part of a designated historic district.
When Maverick Pipe purchased Hangar 2 for its manufacturing operations, preserving the building’s historic character became an important part of its renovation. BVB Architectural Muntins were selected to replicate the appearance of the original steel windows while seamlessly integrating with new storefront framing.
Design Goals: Historic Preservation with Custom Glazing Solutions
BAM was tasked to mimic the appearance of the original operable windows in the new storefront openings as well as align with between-the-glass muntins for a thorough divided glass look. This required a custom layout including the use of a wider profile that matched the sightline of the buildings original operable windows.
BAM had to meet approval from the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO).
Solution: Screw-In Muntin Grids by BVB Products
For secure attachment and integration with storefront systems a screw-in muntin installation was selected:
System: Screw-In
Perimeter: BAM-22
Muntin: BAM-01
Muntin: BAM-03
The finish was dark bronze anodized.

Installation Insights: Designed with Glaziers in Mind
The system was installed by BVB Glass who wanted the precision and uniformity of factory fabricated muntin grids. BVB’s fully assembled screw-in muntin grids eliminated the need for precise muntin placement in the field and the associated labor.
The BVB screw-in system utilized a perimeter profile that uses an extended leg that blends with the storefront framing, creating a space to attach the muntin grid for seamless integration into the glazing system without the hassle of applying tape.
Why Glaziers and Architects Trust BVB Architectural Muntins for Commercial Projects
BAM’s systems offer significant advantages for glazing contractors and project owners alike:
Faster install times thanks to pre-assembled grid systems
Lower costs compared to true divided lites or field-assembled alternatives
Superior longevity, no muntins falling off after exposure
Flexible compatibility with curtainwall and aluminum storefront systems
Architectural accuracy to match historic design standards
